Sugar cane is a tropical plant that is mainly cultivated in the eastern parts of Southern Africa. The fleshy culms are pressed to obtain the juice, which contains large quantities of sugar. The juice is then boiled and further refined. Sugar cane does not only contain sugars, however, but also proteins, minerals, pectin and organic acids. Syrup, molasses, rum, alcohol, gum and livestock fodder are also produced from sugar cane. |
